Transport data should be collected for road-, rail-, water-, air- and light transport and divided into public, private and freight transport. Helpful statistical indicators include: modal share of all transport, main directions and even purpose of travel. Information for the last one is more difficult to obtain, but knowing why people travel is a valuable starting point for reducing congestions and avoiding unnecessary travel (thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions).

Suggested statistical indicators to be collected:

  • Transport by type
  • Main directions by type
  • Main directions by traffic volume
  • Purpose of travel
  • Use of alternative fuels
  • Access to public transport
  • Access to safe cycling routes
